America’s real energy crisis isn’t supply — it’s outdated infrastructure.

I talk to business leaders every day who are terrified of “running out” of power. They see the headlines about oil prices or global supply chains and they worry. But here is the hard truth: We do not have a supply problem. We have a delivery problem.

America is currently trying to run a 2030 economy on a foundation built in 1980. If we do not address this gap, the “Future of Abundance” we keep hearing about will stay stuck behind a blown transformer.

The 1980 Foundation

Think about the world in 1980. We had incandescent bulbs, landline phones, and massive industrial plants that ran on predictable schedules. The grid was designed for that world. It was a one way street from a massive power plant to your home or office.

Fast forward to 2026. We are plugging in millions of electric vehicles. We are building massive data centers to train the next generation of AI. We are deploying robotics on factory floors that never sleep. These technologies do not just use more power; they use power differently. They require precision, high capacity, and constant reliability.

Why Data Centers and AI Change Everything

The digital age is hungry. An AI search query can use ten times the energy of a standard Google search. When you multiply that by a billion users, you realize that our current copper wires simply cannot handle the load.

When I look at cities like Rochester or St. Louis, I see incredible potential for growth. However, that growth is hitting a ceiling because the local grid capacity is tapped out. We are trying to push a firehose of data through a garden hose of electricity. It is not just inefficient; it is a systemic risk to our status as a global leader.

The Companies Upgrading Today Will Own the Future

In my view, the most successful companies of the next decade will not be the ones with the best software. They will be the ones that secured their own power.

We are seeing a massive shift toward microgrids and onsite energy generation. Smart leaders are realizing that they cannot wait for a government agency to upgrade the neighborhood substation. They are building their own “Energy Islands.”

By integrating solar, SMRs, and advanced battery storage, these companies are decoupling themselves from an aging, fragile system. They are creating a “Digital Grid” that is as smart as the AI it powers.

Moving Toward Abundance

I am an optimist. I believe that this crisis is actually a massive opportunity for innovation. When we upgrade our infrastructure, we are not just fixing old wires. We are building the nervous system for a new civilization.

We have the technology to create a grid that is self-healing, decentralized, and virtually limitless. The only thing standing in our way is the “1980s mindset” that infrastructure is someone else’s problem.

If you want to lead in the age of Robotics and AI, you have to start at the outlet. The future is electric, but only if we build the path to get there.
