Most of a building’s energy loads get a break. Lights go off, offices empty out, HVAC setbacks kick in overnight. Refrigeration never does. Walk-in coolers, freezers, and reach-in cases run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whether the store is open or not. That means refrigeration inefficiency compounds every single hour instead of just during business hours, which is exactly why it deserves more attention than it usually gets.

The compressor that never gets a day off

A compressor sized and maintained for its actual load runs efficiently. One fighting a low refrigerant charge, a failing capacitor, or a condenser coil caked in dust works harder for the same output, every hour it runs. Doors, gaskets, and the war against warm air

Every time a walk-in door opens, warm humid air rushes in and the system has to remove that heat and moisture all over again. Defrost cycles: necessary, but often wasteful

Frost buildup on evaporator coils blocks airflow, so periodic defrost is required. The problem is that most systems still run defrost on a fixed timer, several times a day, regardless of how much frost has actually accumulated. Demand-based defrost, which triggers only when frost buildup crosses a real threshold, cuts wasted defrost cycles without touching product temperature. Timer-based systems that have never been reviewed are usually defrosting more than the coil needs.

Coils dirty enough to double your bill

A clean evaporator or condenser coil moves air and rejects heat the way it was designed to. A dirty one restricts airflow, forcing the compressor to run longer to hit the same setpoint. Coil cleaning is routine maintenance, not a capital project, and it is one of the highest-return, lowest-cost items on any refrigeration checklist. Kitchens and back-of-house spaces are exactly where this maintenance gets skipped first when staff attention is stretched thin.
