We all get into mental ruts from time to time. Everything is well one day and then it becomes a struggle to do even the most duties the next. Or maybe you feel like you’re taking one step forward and two steps back with every decision you make. External circumstances, internal beliefs, or both might trigger this type of thinking, often known as a slump. Finding a way out of a rut, on the other hand, nearly always involves finding a means to reframe your perceptions of both.
Many of us have become stuck in a mental rut as a result of the pandemic’s impact during the last two years. You may feel fine one minute and then find it very impossible to accomplish basic responsibilities the next. This funk could be caused by our own ideas, external factors, or a combination of the two. Jason Guck, out of Rochester, New York, has been a public speaker and entrepreneur for over 20 years and has definitely found himself in a rut from time to time in his life and career. Below, he shares some tips that have helped get himself out of a mental rut and start thriving.
- Make tiny, manageable goals for yourself.
According to Mr. Guck, one simple approach to get out of a funk is to mentally check off tiny activities as completed on a daily or weekly basis. Goals might be as basic as cleaning out your closet or writing that essential email you’ve been putting off for a while. In any event, these small victories will make you feel good and re-energize your sense of accomplishment.
Jason Guck then adds that people who are stuck in a rut mostly feel powerless because to make progress, you need momentum and getting started is actually how we can get started
- Engage in attentive meditation.
Mr. Guck recommends incorporating mindfulness meditation, which entails focusing on your breathing, as part of your everyday routine. Meditation creates a buffer between you and your thoughts, allowing you to observe them for what they are. They’re just words; they’re just thoughts. He emphasizes that we don’t have to fuse with everything that crosses our thoughts.
- Make a list of your negative ideas.
Literally write down any negative self-talk you’re experiencing. This can effectively build distance between you and your ideas, similar to meditation. The plain process person putting your thoughts down and reading them back will typically help you recognize that they’re not actually objective truths. You’ll be more likely to see that your negative beliefs are actually fairly absurd, utterly untrue, or presumptions if you approach them from this perspective.
- Change your negative thoughts into positive ones.
When you’re in a mental funk, the goal isn’t to think positively all of the time—after all, bad things happen. While we have no influence over external factors, we do have control over our own thinking. As a result, the objective, according to Jason Guck, is to transform those negative beliefs into more realistic and productive affirmations.
- Try something completely different.
The rut was formed by your present situation and mindset—so why not try something completely out of your normal routine to improve those conditions? Mr. Guck advises changing up your habitual behavior is a great tactic to break out from the autopilot state that might causes you to feel stuck or bored.
“In terms of social interactions, this could be taking a beginner’s improv class, attending a community meet-up, or attending a gathering with people you don’t know. In the dating world, it may be going on a blind date without previously scrutinizing their social media ” he explains. In terms of your job, he recommends taking on a side project or talking to your supervisor on doing something new. More sentiments of reinforcement can sometimes be brought about by additional duties.
Many people spend their live in a mental rut without even knowing. It is so easy to grow used to the feeling until it becomes the norm. We all have a chance to stop languishing and start thriving. This way, we become happier people because we become more creative and productive.
